Races 2010

These are races that I find interesting, for one reason or another. They might be close to my home (Huntington, WV), they might be races I enter every year, they might be races I've run in the past, they might be races I'd like to attend, but, haven't gotten around to. The list might include road races, cross-country races, trail runs, track meets, and God knows what else.

This year (2010) I am reaching a little farther for longer races (15K to 15 milers) and especially trail/x-country runs, which are rarer than road races and thus harder to find. (I believe that off-road races make you strong in a way that flatland running cannot. This does not include rail trails.)

P.S.

If you find errors, if you know of schedule changes, cancellations, etc., if you know of any races that might fit into my list, please, email me at runningfool@tykie.com and include as much detail as possible. My general scheme, which unfolded spontaneously, more or less, is that I'll go as far as 50 miles for a 5K, 100 miles for a 10K or 5 miler, 200 miles for a 10 miler to half-marathon, the ends of the earth for the right marathon. (I drove eight or nine hours to get to the Chicago Marathon in '97.) The limits are not cast in stone. And there are exceptions, ie. The Debbie Green 5K, in Wheeling, approximately a 200 mile drive. I haven't made it, yet, but, I haven't given up, either.

Of course, I do some independent research, as well. Some races I list won't be listed on any of the sites, below. I think that they should be.

ADDITIONAL LINKS - useful and/or interesting sites

The following are a few sites I find very useful when looking for races. They cover a lot larger geographical area than I do.

  • iPlayOutside, Inc...web site http://www.iplayoutside.com/
  • The Running Journal...web site http://www.running.net/
  • Run Ohio...web site http://www.runohio.com/
  • I highly recommend all three of these.
  • The latter two are part of or afilliated with the Running Network (web site http://www.runningnetwork.com/). I suspect any site associated with them is probably pretty good. I use these regularly. They both are newsprint style running magazines/newsletters, as well.
  • You can no longer find my running club here http://www.huntingtonroadrunners.org/. This site has been out of commission for a few months. It was looking bleak, for a while. However, I was told on 8/25/09, that their new website should be up in a couple of weeks or so. I will post a new link, as soon as I have it. In the meantime, if you would like to join the Huntington Roadrunners Club, you can get an application for the year 2010, here. If you are considering bedoming a runner, for fitness, for competition, to help quit smoking, to lose weight or for any reason, this ia a good place to start. They have a good program for training beginning runners. Try it for one year. You won't be sorry!
  • For the Tallman Track Club, click on the url http://www.tallmantrackclub.com/, then click on "ENTER" or just wait. "ENTER" will eventually click on itself. Their newsletter contains a local racing calendar, some race results and a ton of photos. They are in the Charleston area (primarily Kanawha and Putnam counties).
  • Road Runners Club of America is especially good if you like to travel to championship races. Their web site is http://www.rrca.org/.
  • There are some good calendars here, http://www.ohiorunner.com.
  • Another place to find events is http://www.eventful.com/
  • Here's a good site in the Parkersburg area. http://www.rivercityrunners.com/
  • Here's another, http://www.ovrunnersandwalkers.org/ the Ohio Valley Runners and Walkers Club.
  • Here's a local site with several good listings. They cover a lot of school meets, as well as road races and such. http://www.tristateracer.com/. They have some results going back as far as 2000.
  • I found this running club on or around 3/30/08, when they were about 18 strong and growing. http://www.calhounrunners.org/ If you're anywhere near Calhoun County, WV, attend some races.
  • Here is a great site for trail runners http://www.wvmtr.org/. West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners
  • Here is a fairly new site (as of 1-4-2010) http://chillrunning.wordpress.com/races/, Chill Running Club, in Chilicothe, OH. It might be worth keeping an eye on them, especially if they develop a proper racing calendar.
  • Here are three sites, one for each state in the tri-state area:
    http://www.runwalkjog.com/ohio2001.htm, for Ohio;
    http://www.runwalkjog.com/WVraces.htm for West Virginia;
    and http://www.runwalkjog.com/ky.htm for Kentucky.
    They are part of http://www.runwalkjog.com/ which has pages for each of the 50 states, D.C., and many other countries.
  • Here's one that is mostly in central Kentucky: http://headfirstperformance.com/freedom.htm. They seem to feature mostly tri-athlons, a few duo-athlons, trail runs, long road races and maybe an ultra or two. Beware: some of their races are in the Central Time Zone and some in Eastern. I'll attempt to make applicable time correlations to listed events, if and when I find the time to work up some tools I can use to make it easier to do.
  • This one lists a few races in the Parkersburg area: http://www.jandjtiming.com/
  • Here's another one that is mostly in central Kentucky http://www.johnsrunwalkshop.com/races/, but also ranges out to other places, including the Huntington area.
